For me the highlight apart from major sights is the graffiti in Sofia – the capital of Bulgaria demonstrates how to color up the urban space without spending a lot of money. Check out these 19 photos from painted transformer boxes and learn more about graffiti in Sofia!

I have to admit: I was surprised by the amount of cool Streetart one can find in Sofia. Beside Paste-Ups and small instalations, the graffiti you can see on the transformer boxes is remarkable:
So…I was curious and wanted to find out more about the artists: a group named “Transformatori” started in 2011 to paint numerous transformer boxes in the Tsar Ivan Shishman Street supported by the municipality of Sofia (see the video above or on Vimeo).
It turned out well and more artists joined, more boxes in other streets got a facelift – like the ones in the Rakovski Street. Until the end of 2012 around 51 Transformer Boxes got painted by 26 different artists:
As for today the number of painted transformer boxes went up rapidly as a lot of shop owners, restaurants and individuals liked the idea so much that they also started to paint the boxes in front of their buildings. The original idea of the campaign, which got partially funded by the “Invest in Bulgaria” project, has been to give Sofia a new, colorful and attracting image.
