Europe

Albania

  • Tirana
Freddys Hostel/B&B – Actually Freddys is more a Hotel which is very well located. The breakfast is quite basic, the rooms are clean and come mostly with bathroom ensuite. There is also free WiFi. Altogether probably the best option if you are heading to Tirana!

Austria

  • Saalbach Hinterglemm
Familotel Lengauer Hof – this heart-warming, family run hotel is located a bit out of town and a great base for families. Beside the cozy, austrian style rooms you can enjoy great food and go for snowshoe hiking or summer hikes right in the backyard of the hotel
  • Fieberbrunn
Hotel Alte Post – beside its location the Spa is a great reason to stay here. Given the size of the hotel it shouldn't be an issue to get a room here. Make sure to pay a visit to the rooftop pool and the sauna!
  • Leogang
Mama Thresl – one of the coolest places I stayed at in Austria as it represents the perfect mix of coziness, modern design and traditional Austrian hospitality. This design hotel was opened just a few years ago, the rooms are very modern, the breakfast is amazing and the restaurant as well as the bar are highly recommended. On the weekends they put up quite the show here with artists and DJs. Highly recommended!

Bosnia & Herzegovina

  • Sarajevo
Hostel Massimo – A brand new, modern Hostel right in the centre of Sarajavo with breakfast and free WiFi. The rooms are very nice as well as the staff which has a lot of recommendations on sights and restaurants if needed.

Bulgaria

In this country you get good value for the money you spend – therefore I often stayed in nice Hotels for great prices!

  • Sofia
Canape Connection – located in the heart of Sofia, very nice staff and good vibe!
Lozenetz Hotel – last time I stayed there I got a very good deal as they have special offers regularly if you book early. This 3 star hotel is located next to the center and comes with average breakfast but nice and helpful staff.
Premier Thracia Hotel (Best Western) – good 4 star Hotel in the center of the city with modern rooms.
  • Plovdiv
City Hotel Plovdiv – one of the best hotel options in Plovdiv: modern rooms, breakfast and good prices.

  • Varna / Kavarna
Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort – one of the best Hotels of the country with an impressive location. Also non-golfers are able to enjoy this small paradise directly at the white thracian cliffs with private beach and a rich breakfast selection. Moreover it's a comparably cheap 5 star resort.
  • Veliko Tarnovo
Yantra Hotel – the best view in town (to the fortress), swimming pool and Spa with relaxing honey massage

England

  • London
Safestay Hostel – opened in 2012 it comes with a fresh design and curtains on their bunk beds.
  • Manchester

Faroe Islands

  • Tórshavn
Hotel Tórshavn – a solid mid-range 3* hotel with reasonable prices (for Faroese standards)
Hotel Føroyar – If you are more into modern design hotels and don't mind spending more you should look into Hotel Føroyar

Finland

  • Lapland (Rovaniemi, Ylläs)
Aurora Estate, Ylläs/Kolari – the small boutique hotel of Heidi & Sirly is by far the best place I stayed in Finland so far. Besides the cozy rooms and the beautiful setting it was the warm-hearted hospitality and the delicious food I got to enjoy here which made me feel like being home. One can really feel how much work and passion both owners put into this little gem which quickly won its first awards for a reason…not to mention the sauna hut with an outdoor hot tub right next to the lake. The parking lot has plugs to plug in your car's block heater during freezing winter nights. Highly recommended hotel! (make sure to say hi from me)

Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, Rovaniemi – due to its location this 4* hotel is the perfect base to explore Rovaniemi and all the things to do in its surroundings. The Sokos Hotel offers comfortable, modern rooms and is in walking distance to all the restaurants and sights in the center of town – even the starting point for our snowmobile tour was right in front of the hotel. Beside the solid breakfast buffet and good WiFi there is also an underground car park where we could park our rental (important for winter nights below -10°C).
  • Helsinki
Best Western Premier Hotel Katajanokka – have you ever stayed in a prison? Here you can as this 4 Star Hotel is indeed a former prison but much more comfortable for sure. Moreover it is well located to discover Helsinki by foot. Only the WiFi is a bit instable due to the thick walls, but the breakfast is great!
Hostel Domus Academica – one of the cheapest options in summer! This Hostel offers dorms as well as privates with bathroom ensuite. It is located 12mins from the central station and also has a sauna. Unfortunately no WiFi (but cable in the rooms) and no breakfast (you can buy but I don't recommend it).
Best Western Hotel Rantapuisto – this 3 star Hotel is located in a very calm surrounding of the archipelago of Helsinki and has an own beach, kayak rental service and a sauna. A perfect place for some relaxed days in the nature close to Helsinki.
  • Kasnäs / Kimito
Saaristokylpylä Kasnäs Skärgårdsbad – if you like to discover the archipelago sea in the south of Finland with it's 50.000 islands this is the right place for you. The Hotel complex (3 stars) consists of numerous modern equipped bungalows with free Wifi, an own swimming pool, sauna and a beach with jacuzzis.
  • Ekenäs
Hotel Sea Front – located in the very south of the country, only a short drive away from Hanko this 2 star hotel offers a great view. Modern rooms, free WiFi and great breakfast!

France

Germany

  • Berlin
Circus Hostel – my favorite Hostel in the capital! Beside the modern rooms (Dorms & Privates) you can also book aparatmens with a great view over Berlin. The hostel also has a Café, a Bar with Brewery and even a David Hasselhoff museum…no joke! Great place!
Aletto Hotel & Hostel Kurfürstendamm – a brand new boutique hostel with one of the best breakfast buffets!
PLUS Hostel – one of the coolest Hostels in town: super stylish and an own swimming pool!
  • Hamburg
Superbude in St.Georg or Superbude St. Pauli – the 2 hostels by Superbude are one of the coolest places to stay in Hamburg. This Design Hostels have their very own style and are a true attraction itself, even though the prices are a bit above the average Hostel prices.
Generator Hostel – this is one of the biggest Hostels in Hamburg and is perfectly located (next to the central station), offers great value for the money spent and has various room options. Rates are starting as low as 13€ (Dorm) but there are also privates with bathroom ensuite.
Motel One Alster – Motel One is known for its stylish design concept and low rates as well as a wide breakfast selection – great package!
East Hotel – if you are a fan of upperclass design hotels you'll love the East, plus it is located perfectly for those who want to enjoy the legendary nightlife of Hamburg!
25h Hafencity – the 25h is known for its outstanding interior design concepts, the Hafencity property connects the maritime flair with modern, urban design. A great place to stay in style!

Iceland

In Iceland we only used Hotels & Hostels in the capital Reykjavik, for all other stops we rented apartments and cabins via HomeAway – a recommendable option for small groups!

  • Reykjavik
Bus Hostel – even though it is located a bit out of town it is ideal for road trips as it is close to the highway and the car rental SadCars has an office in the hostel. The Hostel is very hip with friendly, helpful staff. The rooms are modern and comparably cheap. There are dorms as well as private rooms, a kitchen and a great common area with bar.
Oddsson Hostel & Hotel – The Oddsson is located closer to the center and a mix of a Hotel and a Design Hostel. I especially liked the comfy Lobby with Bar (regular events take place here), restaurant and a karaoke room. You can book affordable dorms as well private rooms with bathroom ensuite.
  • Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Arnastapi Cottages – the cozy and modern wooden cabins are located close the the impressive sea cliffs of Arnastapi. Prices include a rich breakfast at the restaurant with a great view to the ocean. Great spot!
  • Akureyri
Nollur Farm – the best and most impressive place we stayed at on our entire road trip. The house fits 4-6 people and is located right on the fjord and comes with an outside hot tub and an open kitchen. The location and view is simply incredible, it was here that we got to see Northern Lights several times. I highly recommend staying for 2-3 days to explore the area (Myvatn, Dettifoss, Asbyrgi Canyon…)
  • Bragdavellir (East Iceland)
Bragdavellir Cottages – these wooden cabins also fit 4-6 people, are located in a great surrounding in the eastern part of Iceland and were our base for exploring this part of the island. A great spot to hike, too!
  • Vik
Cosy Cottage in Vik – located remotely in the countryside this house for 5 people is a great place to relax and unwind. The waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss are just around the corner, a great chance to go there early in the morning before everyone else. The house comes fully equipped and has a beautiful wooden terrace with an endless view – ideal to have sunset drinks at.

Ireland

  • Clifden
Quay House – a very special B&B! Located right by the water in the center you can sleep in themed rooms. I chose the Napoleon room and felt like an emperor for one night. haha.
  • Dublin
Barnacles Hostel – Top location in Temple Bar, friendly staff and cozy living room.
Times Hostel Camden Place – cheap and well equipped.
  • Galway
House Hotel – this modern 4* hotel is situated right in the center, offers modern rooms, free WiFi and a very friendly service. Good breakfast.
  • Leenaun/Connemara
Delphi Resort & Spa – located north of the fjord within the countryside of Connemara this hotel is famous for its Spa. Beautiful surroundings and a great spot to unwind.
  • Sligo
The Beach Bar – located right by the wide beach outside of Sligo the beach bar is an Irish Pub with a B&B right in the backyard. Cozy pub, great breakfast, beautifully located and super friendly owners will guarentee a great stay!

Italy

  • Bologna
B&B Dell'Orso located in a calm sidestreet in the center of Bologna. Modern rooms with WiFi and breakfast in a nearby Café included. Good deal!
  • Folgaria
Alpen Hotel Eghel this 3 star hotel is the perfect base for active holidays in the region – modern rooms, lovely staff, a great restaurant and an excellent location!
  • Rovereto (Trentino)
Casa del Pittore this small family owned 3 star hotel not only offers a great view over the city, it also has one of the best breakfasts I had in the region. The rooms are nicely decorated and comfortable, the staff is lovely too – highly recommended!
  • Rimini
Savoia Hotel a great 4 star Hotel right at the beach front of Rimini with a nice view and an own beach section.
  • Rome
The Yellow Hotel & Hostel – good location, great parties, modern, own restaurant; the privates are located in the annex building and therefore very calm!

North Macedonia

  • Skopje
Unity Hostel – very well located Hostel with helpful staff, breakfast and WiFi. Dorms as well as privates for good prices and a great atmosphere!

Norway

  • Bergen
Penthouse next to Bryggen – this newly renovated Apartment is located right in the city center and is very similar to the apartment we used as our base to explore Bergen and the area around (unfortunately the one we used isn't available anymore). This Penthouse comes with a fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms (sleeps 6 people!) and a very cosy living room. This apartment is ideal to explore the old town and is located just around the corner from the Floibanen which takes you to the top of Mt. Floyen with its iconic view over Bergen.
Marken Guesthouse – this lovely Guesthouse is a great budget option as it offers private rooms as well as dorms for affordable prices right in the historical city center of Bergen.

HI Bergen Hostel Montana (Hostel) – this is a classic hostel offering budget rates starting at 39€ in a prime location. Apart from dorms they also offer private rooms for comparably low rates around 69€ per night. Breakfast included in all stays.
Citybox Bergen (*** Hotel) – this small Hotel also offers low-rate and makes check-in easy due to a Self-Check-In method. The rooms are modern and have everything you need even though there are no breakfast options. The location is very central and rates start at 67€.
Zander K Hotel (**** Hotel) – considering the whole package this hotel offers the best price-value: good location, friendly service and a good breakfast are the perfect foundation for an enjoyable stay in Bergen. Prices start at 128€ for double rooms.
Radisson Blu (**** Hotel) – if you'd like to stay right in the heart of the old town the Radisson Blu is a great choice.

  • Herand / Jondal
Cottage in Herand – this cottage is overlooking the Hardangerfjord and was our homebase to explore the area around Jondal, Odda and to do the Trolltunga hike. The spacious house comes with a fully equipped kitchen, a super comfy living room with huge panoramic windows and a huge terrace to enjoy the incredible view. The cottage is also ideal for families due to its many sleeping spaces for kids upstairs. In summer you can enjoy the hot tub while overlooking the fjord. Trust me: if you are in the area this is where you want to stay – pricey but soooo worth it!
  • Stavanger
House Boat “Cheyenne” – sleeping on the house boat of Heidi & Morten is a truly unique experience! Even though you share the space with the owners they are so lovely and the converted boat itself is a local attraction which makes up for it. Right now they don't offer stays but you can find similar boats in Stavanger to stay on AirBnB. Make sure to use my AirBnB Link to save 25 US$!
  • Lofoten
The following recommendations are related to the route we chose to explore the islands from south-west to north-east:

Å Rorbuer (our choice) – traditional fisherman huts that got turned into neat apartments with excellent views. You can choose from a range of huts with different capacities. A restaurant & bar can also be found on the property.
Lofoten Å HI Hostel – one of the few hostels you can find on the Lofoten. You can choose between dorms and privates. Best price-value ratio in Å!
Å-Hamna Rorbuer – another option if you'd like to stay in the iconic red fishermen huts.
Eliassen Rorbuer – One of the most beautiful properties on the Lofoten – beautifully located on the island of Hamnøy and with that forming one of the Instagram-Hotspots. Besides the location theses holiday homes are fully equipped. If you don't like to cook yourself you can head to the restaurant.
Bed & Breakfast Reine – a classic bed & breakfast located in Reine.
Sakrisøy Gjestegård – This place offers neatly decorated rooms for fair rates. Located on the island of Sakrisøy it offers a phantastic view!
Ramberg Gjestegård – In Ramberg you can rent tiny huts that are located straight at the beach. The budget friendly bungalows are fully equipped.
Unstad Arctic Surf – This is the ideal choice when traveling in a group of 4. The property also has a sauna, hot tub and a communal kitchen. If you want to connect your stay with surfing this is the place to be!
Seaside View Lofoten – located a bit north of Unstad you can find these bungalows. Due of its off-the-path-location the rates are a bit lower than in other spots on the Lofoten!
Lofoten Basecamp – these big and modern holiday homes are a great option for families and groups. Located on the Vestvagøy island. You can also use the Sauna with a unique view. Impressive!
Henningsvær Guesthouse – Very cosy guesthouse. Rooms are basic but affordable and breakfast is included in the rates.
Henningsvær Bryggehotell – If you like to stay in style the Bryggehotell is the right choice. Excellent location and good breakfast.
Thon Hotel Svolvær (my choice in Svolvær) – If you don't need to worry about budget you should definitely stay here for 1 or 2 nights. Beside the great location it is the breakfast that leaves you speechless – for me the most incredible breakfast buffet I've ever seen. On top of that the rooms are modern and offer great views over the harbour of the city.
Scandic Svolvær (Gareths choice) – while I was staying in the THON Hotel Gareth decided to check into the Scandic located just a short walk away from my hotel. The rooms here are smaller but the same goes for the rates.

Portugal

Because of my love for surfing I visit Portugal regularly and can therefore offer a wide range of recommendations for Hostels and Hotels throughout the country. In order to give you a better overview I started using tables to categorize the various options available for each destination.

Argentina

  • Buenos Aires
Sabatico Hostel – great atmosphere, relaxed, sympathetic staff, jacuzzi, and best breakfast in BA.

Florida Hostel & Hotel – big hostel located right in the city center. Recommendable for couples and groups.
  • Bariloche
Hostel Achalay – Usually you don’t expect much if it comes down to food in a hostel. Pablo is a great character and an awesome chef: be it the homemade bread for breakfast or a delicious Asado for dinner
  • Cafayate
Hostal Benjamin – here I received not only warm hospitality, but also help and support with the planning and organization of my activities in and around Cafayate.
  • Cordoba
Mate Hostel – small but awesome: nice people, pool table and comfy DVD corner.
  • El Calafate
I Keu Ken Hostel – probably the best hostel in the very touristic El Calafate, great view!
El Puente Apartments – if you want to stay in a double room the Puente Apartments are a very good budget option: we only paid 40€ per night with a basic breakfast. The owner is super friendly and happy to help with recommendations for restaurants.
Blanca Patagonia – for small groups this is a great option and comes with a whirlpool, a view over the lake, a nice lobby and a great breakfast buffet. The only downside migth be that it is located a bit out of town in a very calm neighborhood.
  • El Chalten
Aylen Aike – This hostel rocks like no other in South America! The Aylen Aike is the meeting point for hikers and climbers (booking upfront highly recommended!), Sebastian is a big fan of Rock’n'Roll music and has a big selection of music DVDs to choose from.
Lo de Guille – during my last visit I stayed in this family run B&B (one of the few places in El Chaltén which offer a basic breakfast). Very friendly staff & affordable prices, comes with a locked storage room (to use when you are trekking) and a kitchen for everyone to use.

Casa del Pueblo Hostel – lovely hostel, homemade bread for breakfast.

Utama Hotel (Budgethotel) – good breakfast and comfort for Bolivia, moreover they offer free fruits and refreshments in the Lobby.
  • La Paz
Wildrover Hostel (Partyhostel) & Hotel – Ok, a party hostel should also be part of this list as you should experience this at least once if you’re going on a long-term trip like this. The Wild Rover offers a good light version regarding the accommodation as they have privates and with that you can party hard but relax afterwards.

Chile

Colombia

  • Bogota
Hotel Bogota Virrey – a great choice in the capital for different reasons: located in the safe Zona Rosa (many restaurants, cafés & nightlife) close to the Virrey park, individual breakfast included, very helpful staff as an additional resource to plan your stay and good prices for modern private rooms. Only downside is the noise if you have a room facing the main street (try requesting a quiet room when booking!).
  • Cali
Caelum Hostel – regarding the crowd we met here and the staff this was by far the best Hostel experience I had in all of Colombia. Apart from that the location is perfect as all sights are in walking distance. We also took part in the free Salsa lessons and activities offered and loved it as much as we loved the nice garden where we constantly got in touch with like-minded travelers. Breakfast was freshly prepared (eggs, bread, marmelade, fruits) and solid, the overall vibe is awesome. Dorms, shared kitchen and one private room (book in advance!) available.
Le Clerc Boutique Hotel – Cali also takes the cake for the best family run hotel I got to experience in Colombia. Besides the cozy interior design and modern rooms I especially enjoyed the big individual breakfast – a great way to start your day. Though it is a little walk to get to the center (10-15mins) this Hotel is located perfectly when it comes down to restaurants and bars. The staff is very friendly, the value offered for the money spent is simply outstanding!
  • Cartagena
Hotel Fegali – located in the hip Getsemani neighborhood and with that close to the historical sights of the city. Very friendly and helpful family who owns and runs this charming place. The included individually prepared breakfast was also very good. Best option if you are looking for a private room for a fair price!
Mama Waldy Hostel – this cozy hostel is also located in Getsemani but has seen better years. Nevertheless the prices are fairly low, the staff is nice and the breakfast is limited but good. Unfortunately the rooftop bar and jacuzzi weren't in full operation during our visit, depending on the guests it can also be a bit noisy. The new manager started some needed maintenance work to improve the experience. Overall good value for the money spent and solid choice for backpackers.
  • Isla Grande, Islas de Rosario
Golden Frog Hostel – as part of a hostel collective the Golden Frog is similar to the other 6 Mansions of Paraiso Secreto but is cleaner and better looked after by the owners in my opinion. Even though there is no WiFi nor breakfast offered it is a great place to unwind and relax. The open architecture, the chilled atmosphere as well as the lovely staff make it easy to get in touch with others. The nearest beach without mangroves is a 10 minute walk away at the restaurant La Pola (recommendable). Great tips by the owners on what to do and overall good vibes.
  • Medellin
Hotel Diez Categoria – located directly in the El Poblado neigborhood this premium hotel offered the best overall package. Through booking we were able to get a special deal for 50€/night which included the huge breakfast buffet as well as the rooftop spa with a great view over the city. Make sure to look for special deals on Booking a few days ahead!
Rango Hostel Boutique – this is anything but a normal hostel. The 2 swiss founders are well traveled and brought many ideas and trends from Europe to Colombia. Altogehter the Rango is a very unique, modern Hostel with a great bar and yummy breakfast in a good location (in the center of El Poblado). The vibes and the overall package make up for the higher price tag for sure!
  • Minca
Casa Loma – located on a hill overlooking the whole area you can enjoy a view all the way down to the coast & Santa Marta. Beside the views Casa Loma is a very social hostel with group dinners each night which are worth their price and a great possibility to meet other like-minded travelers. The staff has many tips for things to do & see in the area, the kitchen staff prepares delicious meals and the accommodation options range from cheap hammocks to private huts. A great base to explore the area in and around Minca, but be warned: the climb to get up here is a good workout 😉
  • Palomino
El Zoo Hostel – if you head to Palomino, this is the place to be: a fairly new hostel, El Zoo has an awesome pool & bar area to hang out at and spend some chilled days at. Beside dorms the hostel also offers a limited number of private rooms and one big tent with a double bed for fair prices which include a very good breakfast. The owners are super nice and help you organize Tubing on the Rio Palomino and have good tips for places to eat and places to dance the night away. Free WiFi included.
  • Rincon del Mar
Blue Sea Cottage – Rincon was my favorite place in the area of Cartagena, this ho(s)tel is one of the reasons why. Located right at the beach the Blue Sea Cottage is at the end of town and therefore a bit quieter than the other hostels but also a bit more comfy. Most of the rooms have bathrooms ensuite, the big balconies (common area) as well as the small beach are great hangout spots. The breakfast is rich and is served indivdually. The staff is helpful and can organize tours for you, too (this is how I got to do the island hopping trip of the San Bernardo Islands).
  • Tayrona National Park & Costeno Beach
Tayrona Tented Lodge (Costeno Beach) – located right next to the Tayrona National Park these beach huts are the perfect base to spend a relaxing few days right by the beach. Costeno Beach still is a hidden gem which is popular by young travelers with a few hostels in one small area. The Tayrona Tented Lodge is a bit more luxurious than the nearby hostels: the bungalows sleep 2-3 people, have bathroom ensuite and the package includes full board which makes for a pretty sweet deal – when you book ahead of time you can get it for as little as 45€ for 2 people. The staff is awesome and the location a true paradise (right next door is a cool bar which has regular beach parties). Highly recommended!
Hotel Jasayma Parque Tayrona – this hotel is an affordable option inside the Tayrona National Park for those who don't want to camp. The staff is super nice and helps planning you exploring the park. The home cooked food offered is highly recommendable, plus the meals are a great chance to get to know all the other travelers staying here and to have some chats over a few cocktails – good vibes all around. The rooms are situated in a house which is open to one side – this way you have a true jungle experience. Bathrooms are shared and located in the garden, WiFi is also available. A great place to spend 2-3 nights at!

Peru

  • Cusco
Milhouse Hostel & Hotel – a good choice for different reasons: located in the center, breakfast with fruits included, restaurant to order food for fair prices and the option to have a private room.
VIP House – another great choice in Cusco, but way quieter and located about 10mins away from the central square. You can choose between dorms and privates, the breakfast is basic but good and the tour office recomendable, too!
Cusco Packers – though located a 15mins walk from the main square this hostel is a great choice as it offers the best view over Cusco from its rooftop terrace & bar. Also here you can choose between dorms or privates with bathroom ensuite – the service is great, too!
  • Lima
1900 Backpackers – located in the centre of Lima and with that close to the historical sights of the city. Smypathetic and helpful staff, tour operator has it's office in the Hostel to organize you tours in Peru.
  • Puno
Inkas Rest Hostel – the sympathetic Alfredo is well connected and knows families who live on Taquile island – a unique option to go for an authentic island tour!

Uruguay

  • Colonia del Sacramento
El Viajero Hostel – comfy and the perfect place for a relaxed stay in Colonia.
  • Montevideo
Splendido Hotel (Budget) – very good located and hip designed.
  • Punta del Este
La Lomita del Chingolo (B&B) – a nice garden with a comfy sofa and barbecue located in one of the calmest spots of Punta del Este – nevertheless only a 10min walk away from the beach.

North America

Canada

During my travels in Canada I stayed in Hotels & B&B's only.

  • Mont-Tremblant (Quebec)
B&B Le Voyageur – small, family run B&B with lovely breakfast and great hosts
  • St. Adèle
B&B Auberge de la Gare – recommendable, family run B&B with friendly service and good breakfast
  • Trois Rivières
Delta Hotel (4* Hotel) – located right in the center, next to the river this hotel is the perfect base for exploring the city
  • Quebec City
Auberge Le Vincent (B&B) – lovely B&B with modern, spacious rooms, friendly staff and awesome breakfast. Located next to the old town you can find many good restaurants and Cafés just around the corner. Highly recommended for your time in Quebec City!
  • Wakefield (Quebec)
B&B “Auberge De Mon Petit Chum” – Dawn traveled the world herself and always had the dream to open her very own B&B. Her dream came true and she now puts all her energy and passion into making your stay memorable, not to mention the sensational breakfast she serves!!

Mexico

During my travels in Mexico I stayed in Hotels, B&B's and some cool Lodges

  • Tuxtla Gutierrez (Chiapas)
Fiesta Inn – big 4 star hotel with all amenities and a pretty good price tag (they often have special deals on booking!) located right next to many restaurants with easy access to all major sights in the area.
  • Comitán de Dominguez (Chiapas)
Casa Caelum – very nice, family run B&B with a beautiful little garden, friendly service and good breakfast. The perfect base for exploring the waterfalls of El Chiflon and the Cenote Chucumaltik.
  • Las Nubes (Ecolodge, Lacandon Jungle, Chiapas)
Las Nubes this lodge was definitely our favorite place in all of Chiapas and served as our overnight spot on the long roadtrip between Comitán and Frontera Corozal…but it is a true attraction itself. The huts and the restaurant are located next to the Las Nubes waterfall in the middle of the Lacandon Jungle of Chiapas – simply beautiful! Make sure to go on a short hike to the mirador (viewpoint) for an incredible view of the area.
  • Frontera Corozal / Yaxchilan (Chiapas)
Hotel Nueva Alianza – these jungle huts are located right next to the river which divides Mexico and Guatemala but is also the only access to get to the impressive ruins of Yaxchilan. The accommodation itself is basic, clean, has a decent restaurant, the staff is very friendly and you can book a private transfer to the ruins as the hotel has its own boats – with that we were the first visitors of the site that day and had the whole place to ourselves for more than 3 hours. With very affordable prices this Hotel is your best bet in the area and highly recommended!
  • Palenque (Chiapas)
Chan-Kah Ressort – this beautiful 4 star resort is the perfect base to explore the sights of the area – the popular Palenque ruins are just 5 km away, Misol Ha waterfall 25km and Agua Azul 60km. You get to stay in jungle bungalows which are nicely spread out on a well maintained property with a restaurant which overlooks the big swimming pool. Highly recommended!

Asia

Iran

Online bookings are only possible for very expensive hotels. Therefore you need to get in touch with hotels, hostels or guest houses via e-Mail in order to reserve a room.

  • Tehran
Markazi Iran Hotel – great location, friendly staff and great breakfast. Perfect base to explore Tehran as the Golestan Palace, the Grand Bazaar and the metro are just a short walk away.
See you in Iran (Hostel) – the pioneer of hostels in Iran offers dorms as well as privates. See you in Iran is not only a Hostel but also place for cultural exchange and meeting point of travelers from all around the world. Booking in advance highly recommended!
  • Shiraz
Niayesh Boutique Hotel – without doubts one of the best options in Shiraz! This goes for location as well as rooms and the beautiful building itself. The Niayesh Boutique Hotel is only one of the few hotels you can book in advance via booking…and you should as it is featured in Lonely Planet and therefore very popular!

Kyrgyzstan

  • Bishkek
Hotel Shah Palace – is located in the city center and of western standards with free WiFi and breakfast included. It's a very solid choice: the rooms are modern, clean and quiet, the location is perfect for exploration of the capital!
  • Bokonbayevo
Almaluu Yurt Camp – next to the Issyk Kul lake (10min walking distance). The Yurts are traditional and very comfy, the food offered is very rich and delicious. Be aware that facilities are located outside (take a look at the video where I show you around the camp). The people who run the camp are lovely and the right contact to organize horseback riding, mountain biking or hiking in the region.
  • Jyrgalan
  • Karakol
Happy Nomads Yurt Camp – offers big yurts with 5-6 beds but you can also rent the whole yurt if needed (good option for families!). Breakfast and free WiFi is included but you can also request to have dinner (additional charge). If you want to walk to the city center you need to factor in about 30mins.

Maldives

  • Ellaidhoo, Ari Atoll – für Taucher & Chiller (Resort)
The Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon is an excellent choice and unlike its competitors affordable, too. The staff as well as the property and its location with the house reef are very good. Only the variety of food and the costs of transportation led to minor a deduction of the overall rating.

  • Dhonveli, Nord Male Atoll – für Surfer & Strandliebhaber (Resort)
Bigger and located very close to the main airport the Dhonveli Resort is a great choice for surfers and people who want to have a variety of options to choose from as it allows for excursions of any type. The resort itself has a great beach as well as a pool and a beautiful bar right next to the surf point.

Sri Lanka

  • Colombo
Cinnamon Red – perfectly located, modern facilities and…the best: a rooftop pool overlooking the city. Quite stylish! From here, you can easily go to explore Colombo.
  • Beruwala
The Cinnamon Bey an amazing resort which is located right next to the beach and is listed as one of the best resorts of the country (5 star). Nevertheless you're able to get a room from 70€. Highly recommended!
  • Habarana (Base for Sigirya, Polonnaruwa)
Chaaya Village (4*) – located at a lake you feel like staying in the middle of the jungle here. Rooms and service are great.
  • Hikkaduwa
Chaya Tranz is one of the best picks in Hikkaduwa. I was also filming there and enjoyed my time in between in this 4 star resort (rooms from 62€). Lovely resort!
  • Kandy & Nuwara Eliya
Cinnamon Citadel in Kandy is located a bit away from the hectic center at the shores of the Mahaweli river in a beautiful setting
  • Trincomalee
The 4 star resort Trinco Blu lohnt sich (ab 55€) – is a great option (from 55€) – great food, beautiful location, very good service. They also have an own tour office in the hotel to book your expeditions.
  • Yala Nationalpark
The Cinnamon Wild is located directly within the borders of the national park and has direct access to the beach. Often even elephants are crossing the resort. If you're fancy a 4 star resort with pool and some amazing food you shouldn't miss the Cinnamon Wild (from 88€)!
